Date: February 24, 2016

Hong Kong, February 24, 2016 – The British Virgin Islands (BVI) has been nominated for an award by Global Arbitration Review (GAR) as a jurisdiction that has made great progress in the past year.

“Having become bound by the New York Convention and [having] passed a new law based on the UNCITRAL Model Law in 2014, the BVI hired an arbitration specialist as it Commercial Court judge, held a major international arbitration conference and launched a new arbitral institution, BVIIAC, with John Beechey as chair of the board,” GAR wrote in explaining the BVI’s nomination on its website.

Twelve other countries, including China, India and Russia, were nominated for the award.

“This nomination is a testament to the progress the BVI has made in its arbitration capability,” said Ms. Elise Donovan, Director of BVI House Asia. “As the demand for arbitration grows in Asia, the BVI stands ready to provide its services and support.”

The GAR Awards will take place at the Mandarin Oriental Pudong in Shanghai on 2 March, two days ahead of the IBA International Arbitration Day.
